Celebrating Nuclear Weapons Becoming Illegal on Friday 22nd January

The Network of Christian Peace Organisations (NCPO) in the UK is organising a celebration of nuclear weapons becoming illegal in international law on Friday 22 January 2021.  Community of Christ has been an active member of NCPO for over 2 years and is involved in helping organise this celebration.

This world-wide effort to abolish nuclear weapons, with the support of over a hundred countries and 599 partner organisations, is led by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). It follows the same legal strategy that led to the successful abolition of land mines, chemical and biological weapons.  ICAN works to stigmatise, prohibit, and eliminate nuclear weapons (see  ICAN in 2017 received the Nobel Peace Prize for drawing worldwide attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons, and its legal strategy to ban nuclear weapons.  Matthew Bolton and spouse Emily Welty have been part of the ICAN team and were also in Oslo for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.  They continue working with ICAN today.   So, we have also a personal connection with this very significant peace project.

Community of Christ is supporting the celebration of this very significant step to world peace.  Resolutions have been passed at Community of Christ World Conferences warning about nuclear weapons, and advocating for reducing and abolishing them (eg WCR 1177 (1982) Peace; WCR 1178 (1982) Nuclear Arms Reduction; WCR 1303 (2013) Action toward Nuclear Weapons Abolition).  President Stephen Veazey, on behalf of the church, signed an interfaith statement organised by the World Council of Churches on nuclear disarmament that was delivered to the United Nations as part of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty conference in New York City in April 2019.  On August 6, 2020, the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, a joint interfaith statement was released by 189 organisations including Community of Christ, Community of Christ (British Isles) and Community of Christ (Europe).

A half hour ecumenical worship service of celebration and thanksgiving will be held at 11:30am  on Friday 22 January through Zoom. Participants will include people from N. Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.  Community of Christ members and friends are warmly welcomed to join.  Andrew Bolton has been part of the planning of this worship event. The Zoom link can be found at Look for Celebration of TPNW entry into force.

The Zoom service will end at 12noon with the ringing of the Peace Bell at Coventry Cathedral joining churches and cathedrals throughout the UK ringing church bells in celebration at this time.

This is an historic moment in the peace movement world-wide. We are privileged to be part of it.
