Basic Beliefs

In Community of Christ, our faith is centred on the Good News of Jesus Christ—a message of divine love, radical peace, and transformative grace. Our basic beliefs are not the last word, but an open invitation to journey deeper into discipleship. We encourage all people to explore scripture, reflect on spiritual experiences, and actively participate in the life of the church.

God

One Living God — Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer

We believe in one living God, made known through Jesus Christ and present with us as the Holy Spirit. We affirm the Trinity—a divine community of three persons united in love. All of creation exists by God’s will and is sustained by God’s presence.

Jesus Christ

God with Us — Fully Human, Fully Divine

Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God, fully human and fully divine. Through his life, ministry, death, and resurrection, God reconciles the world, offering healing, forgiveness, and new life. Jesus invites all people into a relationship rooted in compassion, justice, and peace.

The Holy Spirit

Giver of Life — Ever-Present and Transforming

The Holy Spirit is God’s living presence in the world. As the Spirit of wisdom and love, it moves through all creation, transforms disciples, and empowers us to live with courage, joy, and purpose. Wherever we find love, peace, patience, and kindness, the Spirit is at work.

Humanity

All Are Created in God’s Image

Every person is made in the image of God. We affirm the worth of all people, regardless of background, identity, or circumstance. This belief grounds our commitment to inclusion, justice, and human dignity in all that we do.

The Church

A Community of Disciples with a Mission

The Church is the global body of those who respond to Jesus’ call. Community of Christ is part of this larger family, with a mission to form Christ-centred communities where all are welcome and empowered. We envision a world where no one lives in poverty and all creation is renewed.

Peace

God’s Shalom — Wholeness for All Creation

We understand peace as God’s shalom—it includes justice, well-being, and the flourishing of all life. Following Jesus, the peaceful One, we are called to pursue peace and justice, even when it is difficult. The Holy Spirit gives us strength to be peacemakers in a broken world.

Scripture

Inspired Word — Living Guidance for Discipleship

Scripture is sacred writing inspired by God. When interpreted responsibly and applied faithfully, it guides us in living as followers of Christ. The Bible is our foundational scripture. Community of Christ also uses the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants because they confirm the message that Jesus Christ is the Living Word of God.

Sacraments

Sacred Moments of Grace

Sacraments are ministries where the love of Christ can be experienced. Community of Christ observes eight sacraments:

Sin and Salvation

Healing from whatever separates us from God

Sin is anything that separates us from God, others, or our true selves. It is a universal human condition but divine grace provides healing and reconciliation, restoring relationships and renewing creation.

Resurrection and Eternal Life

Christ Is Risen — Love Is Stronger Than Death

We believe God is God of life and not of death. Easter assures us that the suffering of this world is not the final word. In Christ, love endures and overcomes all that demeans and degrades creation.
